Pioneer Day

We decided to explore the Utah mountains for Pioneer day. In the state of Utah you get the day off (at least most of folks get the day off) on the 24TH of July, to celebrate the arrival of the first pioneers into the desert wilderness of Utah.

That must had been a bitter sweet moment. So happy to end the trek but not sure they were overjoyed with this new home. It is beautiful now but how brown and desolate it must have been.

We hiked for over 2 miles into an incredible fishing hole. The boys fished and I entertained our 5 year old since his fishing attention is short, very short!!

I was so amazed by Ross! He hiked the entire way, 4 1/2 miles round trip. Only one or two times did he ask to be carried. This is the same child that can not walk around the block with me without needing a ride.

To honor the pioneers we sang Pioneer songs. The favorite was "Pioneer Children sang as they walked and walked and walked!" The kids all thought they knew how those Pioneer kids felt. HA, we hiked a measly 4 miles with hardly a thing to carry. Then we hopped into a car, DROVE home, took baths/showers and slept in our cozy beds!!!

The Pioneer Children walked two to three times that distance in one day, had to sleep on the ground, and get up the next day and do it all over again. Not to even mention we had sunscreen, bug repellent, great food, the list goes on and on.

Can you imagine how strong and lean they were by the time they arrived in Utah? Maybe

that is the next big idea for a diet craze! We can all go on a trek together and get phyiscally fit!!! There has got to be an easier way!!!

Loved your pioneer tribute. It really puts things into perspective about how they suffered along their trek.

It was such a fun day. It was good to hike, sing, and talk to the kids and have them get a better glimps of the pioneer's sacrafice.

I am hoping this becomes a pioneer day tradtion. Nothing like a good hike to help us understand a tiny itty bit what they did!
